If you’re in North Carolina, New York, or Napa Valley take a look at what I’ve got cookin’. And for those elsewhere on the planet, there’s a very special virtual event on the horizon. If you don’t already have Islas, you can buy a copy from your favorite independent bookstore here. Please share, and thank you for reading!

Von Diaz in conversation with Lauren V. Allen and Brigid Washington
Saturday, May 25 at 11:00 AM EST
Free and open to the public
I am so fortunate to get to work with some of the most creative culinary talents in the NC Triangle! This weekend, I’ll be joined in conversation by photographer Lauren V. Allen and chef / journalist Brigid Washington for an intimate conversation on collaborating on Islas, and celebrating the role of women in island communities. We’ll discuss how our backgrounds backgrounds—Puerto Rican, Mexican, and Trinidadian, respectively—inform how we approach our work.
What Island Foodways Teach Us about Climate Change
Wednesday, May 29 at 6:00 PM EST - VIRTUAL
Tickets: $20-40
Next week, Clarissa Wei and I will co-host a virtual event to explore the ways that climate change is impacting some of the most vulnerable communities on earth—islanders. Colonial legacies, geographic isolation, and environmental challenges can make life on islands difficult. Nevertheless, island communities across the globe have tested strategies for survival that are reflected in the complexity, creativity, and resilience of their cuisines. We’ll discuss how we research, report, and develop recipes that reflect innovation and connection to the local environment. We’ll also consider the role of storytelling in preserving history and offering strategies for survival amidst an uncertain climate future.

Panelists will discuss the history and culture of the African diaspora through the multilayered lens of food. The event is part of NYBG’s Juneteenth Weekend.
